Hexham Orpheus Choir are pleased to welcome back soloists Graeme Danby and Valerie Reid for our concert on May 2nd in Hexham Abbey. We have a varied programme accompanied by a full professional orchestra including:

Elgar:The Music Makers, Soloist Valerie Reid, was first performed at the Birmingham Festival on 1 October 1912 conducted by Elgar. It is semi-autobiographical with a number of quotations from his earlier works. The text is the 1874 poem Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy.

Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture is a an orchestral piece inspired by a trip in 1829 to the Scottish island of Staffa, with its basalt sea cave known as Fingal's Cave.

Verdi:Ella giammai m'amò Soloist Graeme Danby, is from Act 4, scene 1 of Verdi's opera Don Carlo. Alone and suffering from insomnia, the King sings that he has to be eternally vigilant and that he will only sleep properly when he is in his tomb.

Stanford: Songs of the Sea Soloist Graeme Danby, is a cycle of five songs for baritone, chorus, and orchestra set to poems by Henry Newbolt.

Brahms: Schicksalslied - The Song of Destiny is a choral setting of a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, accompanied by the orchestra. It is considered one of Brahms best choral works.

Hexham Orpheus choir is a non-auditioned choir directed by Mark Edwards.  We have performed Vaughan Williams The Sea Symphony, Elgar The Dream of Gerontius, Tippett Child of our Time and Karl Jenkins The Armed Man all with a full orchestra in the magnificent setting of Hexham abbey in the last few years.

Mark Edwards Director trained as a percussionist before taking up conducting and receiving a MMus with Distinction from Newcastle studying with Eric Cross. Mark is pleased to have studied and worked with many great conductors including Sian Edwards, Pierre-Andre Valade, Philippe Bach, Rodolfo Saglimbeni, Philip MacKenzie, Christopher Gayford and Edwin Roxburgh.  He has received scholarships to participate in international master classes, and recent highlights include performing at the Royal Albert Hall London, Symphony Hall Birmingham and live broadcasts on Radio 3s 'In tune' and 'Words and music' programmes.  He is currently director of music for Northern Praeclassica, Felling Male Voice Choir, Hexham Orpheus Choir, Newcastle Sinfonietta, workshop leader for Streetwise Opera, Associate Artistic Director for the Northern Chords Music Festival.  Mark sings with Voices of Hope, winner of the BBC Choir of the Year 2016.

We are dedicated to performing and promoting access to classical music in the Tynedale Valley, Northumberland. We are based in Hexham and hold our biggest concerts in Hexham Abbey. We have around 85 members and always welcome new singers, both experienced and less experienced.
