DEATH RACE 2000 with Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction
Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction, living legends of comic books, join us for a special screening of this exploitation classic which reflects the mania of red-blooded American self-destruction in the chrome fenders of its roaring death machines!
Welcome to the year 2000. In the wake of a global economic crisis, the United States has abandoned democracy for totalitarianism and martial law. Lacking agency, the citizens have developed a lunatic blood thirst, fueled by a government-sanctioned road race won by the driver who kills the most pedestrians. Babies and the elderly are especially high-point earners.
But this year the drivers have something to worry about other than getting killed by rival contestants: there is a group of anti-race radicals trying to stop the race for good. The game's all-time champion, Frankenstein (David Carradine), takes on such colorful characters as Machine Gun Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone) and Calamity Jane (Mary Woronov) in this dark comedy/sci-fi classic directed by Paul Bartel. Producer Roger Corman has spoken eloquently about the artistic freedom enabled by low-budget movies. DEATH RACE 2000 showcases his genius for delivering high-octane action at dime-store prices. The film balances comedy, morbidity, social commentary, and entertainment, and packages it in a wildly inventive spectacle of dragon-toothed muscle cars, explosions, and gore that is thrilling and hilarious and self-incriminating.
