Classical theatre, off key, for the people.
We are artists and scholars who love the classics and we are devoted to sharing our deep love of these texts with our community. While focusing primarily on the works of Shakespeare, we celebrate great works from both within and outside the Western canon, and throughout history. We want our audiences to fall in love with these works with us.
We favor a historicist approach, understanding the sociopolitical climate of the times the plays were written and finding ways to translate that to the modern audience. We incorporate a variety of theatrical schools and traditions (including Meisner and improv techniques). We are open to race- and gender-blind casting, non-standard readings and challenging interpretations.
Accidental Shakespeare strives to attract audiences who would not ordinarily attend classical theater. We are committed to the reasonably priced tickets for our productions, including pay-what-you can and free seats.
Finally, we provide a collaborative and supportive artistic environment for the artists who work with us, not only the members of the company but to guest artists and volunteers as well. We are an inclusive community working together to bring classical theater to the people, off key.
