SYREN was formed in 2003 by Kate St. Amand and Lynn Peterson and has since produced seven New York Seasons. SYREN has been presented at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Symphony Space and Queens Theatre in the Park and by numerous schools and performing centers around the region. It has been supported by grants from New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs, Harkness Space Grants (92nd Street Y), and residencies at DanceNOW/NYC's Silo and Dance Theater Workshop's Outer/Space. SYREN participates in WNYC, New York Public Radio's *STAR* Initiative.
Outreach and education are core company activities, and the co-directors have led workshops or set pieces on students at Purchase College, Yale University and Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, among others. SYREN was proud to launch its fourth year of "Dance on Canvas" in January 2011. This Partnership with the Art Students League of New York is a series of gallery-based rehearsals where visual artists capture the company's dynamic motion in oil, charcoal and ink.
