In 2011 a group of 25 students from the John Abbott College Professional Theatre Program were selected by The International Collegiate Theatre Festival (ICTF) to perform a production of Edward Bond's "The Tin Can People" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. It was an incredible honour to have been chosen and a unique educational experience. The students performed, attended workshops, other productions and met students from all areas of the globe.
In August 2013 the department will be repeating the venture with an increased number of 32 students who will perform Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood. Besides rehearsing and planning the practicalities of the event, a great deal of time is being dedicated to fundraising to offset the personal costs to the students who will each pay close to $4,000 to participate in this trip; $2,900 each directly to the International Collegiate Theatre Festival (ICTF) for administration, two weeks board and lodgings, renting the performance venue, transportation, workshops, meals and sightseeing. The balance is the approximate return air fare and ticket costs for other shows.
Fundraising activities include bake sales, bagging groceries at the malls, a fundraising show as well as a Gala Performance of Under Milk Wood prior to departure.
John Abbott College is providing funds for all of the production aspects of the venture, i.e. printing, costumes, properties, author rights and publicity; however it is the student alone who finances his or her own participation.
Your ticket purchase will help to defray the participants costs as well as provide you with a wonderful evening of hilarious theatre. Come and join the fun!
