ABOUT STS:The Shandaken Theatrical Society (STS) -- which now calls The Phoenicia Playhouse home -- was founded in 1976 with its first full production of
The Sound of Music. By 1978 it was incorporated as The Shandaken Theatrical Society, Inc. a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Since then STS has mounted over 80 full-scale productions and countless other smaller projects. Our creative staff and crew dedicate their time and energies to provide an intimate venue with the most complete sets, costumes, props, lights and sound possible. Our productions include performers from all walks of life, from former professional to first time actors, college students, community theater veterans and children enjoying their first stage experience.
Over the years we have produced a diversity of shows including musicals, contemporary and classical plays, original works by Hudson Valley playwrights, cabaret performances, a film series, an annual free family Christmas show, readings, events performed by local musicians and workshops for adults and children.
We are committed to keeping our ticket prices and fees as low as possible so our programs can remain accessible to everyone. We proudly support the village of Phoenicia as a theatrical ensemble, cultural space and social venue.
Thank you for your continued support of our productions and programs. We couldn't do it without you!!!
ABOUT THE BUILDING:In 1998 STS purchased its current home at 10 Church Street in Phoenicia. The building was constructed in 1887 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Since then, it has housed the original charitable and fraternal organization, an auction house, a movie house and now one of the Catskills longest-lived artistic institutions.
In 2006, with the help of grants and local donors, the second floor was renovated. Repairs and improvements were made to the costume department, props room and the make-up and dressing areas.
In 2010 the "Raise the Roof Campaign" funded replacement of all the lower roofing and made repairs to the roofing over the main structure.
In 2016 the main roof was re-shingled thanks to members' donations and support.
In 2017, the building has been renamed the Phoenicia Playhouse, in honor of the hamlet it calls home.
