UP Theater Company

THE MISSION OF UP THEATER COMPANY is to present fully produced, professional theater to its community in Northern Manhattan, employing many local artists who call this corner of the city home. Despite our parochial concerns, UP is no "community theater". We eschew crowd pleasing chestnuts in favor of new work that challenges our audience's preconceived notions of who they are and what they think they think; work that is relevant to our Uptown urban environment and unafraid to be gritty, rambunctious and irreverent. Ultimately, we envision a theater that will be a destination for theatergoers from all across the area, drawn by work of quality and passion.

Since 2010 UP has demanded attention with its diverse theatrical endeavors: from productions of daring new plays to its cunning adaptations of The Canterbury Tales and Moliere in local parks, to our Showing UP theater lab where artists share works-in-progress; to our Subway Wedding, a flash improv/riot which UP staged in two local subway stations to highlight the dangers caused by the removal of their token-booths. UP has received funding from individuals, local government and arts organizations, as well as recognition from church and civic leaders. In 2013 we received a City Council Citation that proclaimed, "In UP THEATER COMPANY we have an outstanding organization worthy of the esteem of the great City of New York".
