Dickinson College Orchestra Concert
The Dickinson Orchestra, under the direction of Ryan Kozak, is excited to present Symphonic Pictures featuring Pohjola's Daughter by Jean Sibelius, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 1 "Winter Daydreams", and Elgars Sea Pictures with mezzo-soprano Ann Fogler (15).
Sibelius' Pohjola's Daughter tells the story of Väinämöinen and his attempt to court "The Daughter of the North (Pohjola)" after seeing her beauty. After succeeding at many of the tasks she sets out for him to do by her, he is eventually thwarted and gives up and proceeds to finish his journey alone. Elgar's Sea Pictures is a set of 5 songs with lyrics by different poets. Each song tells a story, related in some way to the Sea. Lastly, Tchaikovsky's 1st Symphony "Winter Daydreams" provides a programmatic title for both his first and second movements and uses a well-known folksong to finish the work.
