MICHAEL JONES is a bassist and band leader based in the Bay Area for over thirty years who plays acoustic music in the fine tradition of Jazz and Blues. After studying music at the University of Colorado, Michael migrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-1970s, where he has had the pleasure of playing with many icons including Al Tanner, Faye Carroll, Ed Kelley, Donald (Duck) Bailey, Pharoah Sanders, Deniece Perrier, Calvin Keyes, and Buddy Montgomery, to name a few.Michaels career as a sideman and bandleader includes serving as the Music Director for the Golden Gate Library Summer Concert and Jam Session series in Oakland, California, for the past twenty-three years.
MISS AZURE MCCALL Innovative and effervescent, "Hawaiis first lady of jazz" Azure McCall is a multi-award winning vocalist. She is heir to the vocal tradition of Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ella Fitzgerald. Her warmth and sense of humor fuel every interpretation. After releasing her first CD, Body and Soul, she was asked by the great bassist Ray Brown to be his vocalist on tour. Of course, she accepted, beginning an incredible jazz journey school was in! Soon after, Azure became the first singer to work with Freddie Hubbards band. Additional collaborators include Frank Morgan, Tennyson Stephens, Joe Lovano, Geoffrey Keezer, Curtis Lundy, Dizzy Gillespie, Houston Person, and many more. In 2008, President Barack Obama asked her to perform at his pre-election party. Thats why he won, Azure says (smiling). Azure became the jazz diva for Celebrity and Royal Caribbean Cruises. She has traveled to more than 50 countries. When not out on tour, Azure is a resident at the California Jazz Conservatory and the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music, where she teaches vocal jazz master classes to youth and adults.
GLEN PEARSON, piano Glen Pearson is a respected pianist, arranger and composer who has worked with and been sought after by some of the great talents of the day. Pearson was Musical/Band Director for the World Renowned Boys Choir of Harlem for eleven years, and he served as principal keyboardist and arranger for Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Regina Belle. He also has been pianist and orchestrator for such notables as trombonists Steve Turre and Delfeayo Masalis; vocalists Jimmy Scott, Earnestine Anderson, Melba Moore, Diane Reeves, Marlena Shaw, Kevin Mehagony and Will Downing; vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson; and saxophonists James Moody, Frank Morgan, Gerald Albright, and Chico Freeman. He has also toured and recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra and can be heard on their latest Grammy Award Winning release "Count Basie Orchestra Swings the Blues" Additional recording credits include the award-winning album by percussionist Babatundae Lea. A highly sought after pianist in the San Francisco Bay Area, Pearson has also performed at such diverse and prestigious venues as New Yorks Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Holland. In addition, he has worked both on and off Broadway with such notables as tap dancers Savion Glover and Gregory Hines, playwright Arthur Miller, actor Patrick Stewart, and director George Wolfe. A native of Oakland, California, Pearson is currently the Chair of the Department of Music at College of Alameda. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from San Francisco State University as well as a Master of Arts degree from New York University.
RANZEL MERRITT, percussion As a highly regarded and much in demand drummer, Randy (Ranzel) Merritt has spent years providing rhythm and swing for music legends and icons such as Pharoah Sanders, Ahmad Jamal, Sylvester & The Two Tons Of Fun, Rodney Franklin, David Murray, The Last Poets, Fontella Bass, Macy Gray and many others. Now under the spotlight as a leader, Randy (Ranzel) presents his new recording TIME OUT, a captivating collection of soulful textures and appealing melodies drawn from his vast and varied musical experiences ranging from Jazz to Funk and R&B to Disco. Anchoring a band that includes members of his talented family, his two sons, saxophonist Ranzel and drummer Denzel, along with his brother Tim on saxophones and special guest Rodney Franklin on piano, Merritt is the guide for an alluring blend of Jazzy sophistication, melodic inspirations and rhythmic stimulations.
