Sol Flamenco Sol Flamenco is an electrifying evening of phenomenal music and dance that will carry you into a world of passion that is unique to flamenco. Sol Flamenco combines flamenco guitar, singing, and dancing into a unique, crowd-pleasing show, transporting audiences to old world Spain. Joelle Gonçalves is the principle dancer with Sol Flamenco and also works as the company's Artistic Director. Her formal dance training began in 2003 when she traveled to Sevilla, Spain, to study with Jose Galvan and has returned to Spain several times since then to study with world famous artists such as Manuel Betanzos, Leonor Leal, and Pilar Ortega. She has also studied at The Institute for Spanish Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to managing shows with some of the Bay Areas finest artists, she has performed as a soloist with local dance companies, including Mi Alma Flamenca, Mark Taylor Flamenco, the "Flamenco Room" at Thirsty Bear and FLAMENCO! LIVE! She has received awards from the Sonoma Arts Council, The Alliance for California Traditional Arts.
Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco Carola Zertuche has received numerous nominations and awards for her talents and contributions to flamenco, and was nominated in 2002 for the Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance: Soloist. She has since been recognized for Best Classic Flamenco Show, San Francisco Magazine in 2007 and for Best Flamenco Show, San Francisco Weekly in 2008. In 2009, she received her second nomination for the Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance: Ensemble. Carola Zertuche currently serves as the artistic director of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, celebrated its 50th year in 2016. During her tenure as artistic director of Theatre Flamenco, she has worked to forge artistic collaborations with international and local artists in productions that pay homage to traditional styles of flamenco while also embracing and showcasing new, modern and even avant-garde approaches to the art form. The results have been some of the most innovative, intriguing, and professional flamenco productions ever staged in the Bay Area, along with a growing profile for the company nationally and abroad.
