Forgotten Chicago Exclusive Six Corners Sears Tour
Two Tours on One Day Only: Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 1:00 PM or 3:30 PM
Join Forgotten Chicago for our first in-depth, behind-the-scenes tour of a single Chicago landmark, the Sears store at 6 Corners. Celebrating its 75th anniversary in October 2013, this vast complex is one of the largest department stores in the Midwest. This exclusive tour, never before offered to the public, will explore this store extensively, both in the store's public space and in its many back-of-the-house functions. Typical of the highly innovative architecture and design of this Chicago-based retailer, the 1938 vintage Sears at Six Corners store features art deco styling, enormous display windows, and a complex and sophisticated mechanical system -- we will discuss these historical features and more during this tour.
Expanded upon and remodeled many times over the years, this Sears has a surprising amount of extant remnants, from a rare electrical system control board still showing Hillman's, a grocery store in the store's basement that closed decades ago, to a cavernous boiler room, to an intact but normally hidden 1930s staircase. We will offer this tour at two different times on one day only; this tour will last approximately two hours and will offer a remarkable, exclusive, and behind-the-scenes look at areas of the store never visible to the public. We hope to see you there!
Purchase tickets today for this rare, never offered before, and probably never to be offered again opportunity!
