Saturday Sep 21, 2019: Ernie Hawkins - A Blues Legend

Ernest Leroy Hawkins was born in Pittsburgh PA in 1947. In the '50's he had a paper route, a beagle and a Roy Rodgers harmonica (which he still has somewhere).

He first learned country guitar, mandolin, banjo and bones from a guy named Pete who worked on his Uncle's farm. Ernie was already playing blues as a teenager when he heard a fellow passing through town play Gary Davis' "Let Us Get Together", and he was hooked!  Somewhere along the way he earned a PhD in  phenomenological psychology, but since the 1980's he's devoted himself to ragtime, the country blues, and players like Davis, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Blake, Willie Johnson, Skip James, John Hurt, Leadbelly... .

"Ernie Hawkins is an important link in the unbroken chain of blues and gospel artists. His guitaristry and love of the style is incomparable. From the Rev. Gary Davis into the future with his own style Ernie is one of the special ones!" -- Jorma Kaukonen

Saturday Nov 2, 2019: The Heather Pierson Trio - Joy, Honesty and Heart

Hailing from New Hampshires Mount Washington Valley, the Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio are three musicians from three very different backgrounds, bringing their skills, quiet charm, and down-to earth honesty to bear on songs that bring to life the sounds of the streets of New Orleans and the valleys of Appalachia and everywhere in between.  Their recordings (2015s Still She Will Fly and 2017s Singin) and live performances feature Heathers multi-genre songwriting, their instrumental virtuosity, and stirring three part vocal harmonies.  A new full-length recording, Lines and Spaces, is currently in the works and planned for a late 2019 release.  Together, Shawn Nadeau, Heather Pierson, and Davy Sturtevant are a musical powerhouse!

"Heather is like two great acts in one, sliding from sweet acoustic Appalachian old-timey vibe with Patty Griffinesque lyrics to brassy New Orleans blues piano with a bone thrown to Bessie Smith." -- DC Bloom | Lone Star Music Magazine

Saturday Jan 11, 2020: The Afro-Yaqui Music Collective - Here to Disturb the Peace

The ASCAP award-winning Afro Yaqui Music Collective is a multilingual jazz band based in Pittsburgh, PA. Since 2016, they have been creating music ranging from soothing, introspective, cello-infused tango; to grooving, hard-hitting, virtuosic jazz-funk. Influenced by front-woman Gizelxanath Rodriguezs experience growing up in two cultures (Mexican and American) and her ancestry as an Indigenous Yaqui woman, Afro Yaqui creates music in which culture and language fuse with catchy melodies and mind-bending harmony to enhance appreciation for diversity in an increasingly multicultural world. Some of their core members include Hugo Cruz (one of Havanas leading drummers and percussionists) Jin Yang (a pipa player who has toured with Yo-Yo Ma and countless others) and Ben Barson (Fred Hos protege and winner ASCAPs top award in jazz composers under 30, the Johnny Mandel prize.)

"With wide-eyed zeal, Afro Yaqui Music Collective delivers a dynamic new opera with Mirror Butterfly  a work that merges indigenous musics with jazz, funk, and hip-hop. The results are thrilling, head-bob-worthy, and deep." -- David Bernado | Recital

With Appalachian-inspired harmonies, masterful songwriting, and a sweet old-time sound, The Early Mays bring a deep love of community music-making to regional and national stages. Most recently, the band appeared on NPR's Mountain Stage, took home the blue ribbon in the Neo-Traditional Band Competition at Clifftop (The Appalachian String Band Music Festival), and hit the #1 position on the folk charts with their latest release, "Chase the Sun."  Emily Pinkerton, Ellen Gozion, and their closest collaborators Rachel Eddy, a prolific old-time performer, and Nicole Myers a genre-crossing cellist, carry their unique creative voicesand carefully honed craftwith them as they explore American traditional music.

"...bursting with originality... The warmth emanating from every song and tune is proof that the collaboration is a labour of love. Deeply respected for their musicianship, [The Early Mays] have hit gold here--this is instrumentalism and harmony singing to make the heart soar." -- Isabel Boothby | UK Old Time News

Songwriter, guitarist, painter, fiddler, slide player, eco-village member and believer in all things possible.  Named 2016 Folk Alliance International Artist-in-Residence, hell surprise you and awaken the cynics.

Joe Crookston is a master storyteller & he is seeking the creative edge.   His music swirls with themes of lightness, darkness, clocks ticking, fiddle looping, weeping willows, slide guitar bending, cynicism, hope, and the cycles of life and rebirth. If you love a moving song and musical madness, Joe Crookston delivers it all.  His songs are universal, his rhythm infectious and in concert, he is funny as hell one moment and transcendent the next.

"This is not reviewers hype... this guy is flat out good" -- Rodger Nichols | The Dalles Oregon Chronicle
