The Expert's Mind: The Ecopoetics of Water
This Expert's Mind installment features the head of the Center for Biodiversity Research at the California Academy of Science, Healy Hamilton, in conversation with poet and activist, Brenda Hillman, whose latest book Practical Water is both an elemental meditation and an ecopoetics.
Using the formats of their very different disciplines, each will explore water as a dynamic, inspiring and important element of life, rather than as something easily come by and too often wasted.
Healy Hamilton is the director of the Center for Applied Biodiversity Informatics at the California Academy of Sciences. Her research interests range from the effect of climate change on biodiversity to the evolution and conservation of certain groups of aquatic organisms, including river dolphins, seahorses, pipefish, and octopuses.
Brenda Hillman is a poet, professor, and activist. Practical Water, the latest volume in her acclaimed pentad of meditations on the elements, employs lyric ingenuity that breathes wonder into a world of interconnection and interdependence. She is the Olivia Filippi Professor of Poetry at St. Marys College.
