Racial Justice Lecture: Liberation Theology and Eschatology in Ysaye Barnwell's work entitled "Fortune's Bones: The Manumission Requiem."
A SEATTLE FORTUNE'S BONES PROJECT EVENT

This Racial Justice Lecture by Dr. Stephen Newby is part of the Seattle Fortune's Bones Project Community Events.  Dr. Newby will explore particular theological implications and their workings as found in Barnwell's "Fortune's Bones." Newby will discuss how the music and text instantiates notions of how we deal with freedom, the afterlife, the pursuit of  cultural heritage and race relations. The panel will relate this lecture to historical and contemporary times.

Dr. Stephen Newby is an Associate Professor of Music at Seattle Pacific University. He is also the Director of Composition and Director of the Center for Worship.

This project is inspired by a book authored by Dr. Marilyn Nelson entitled Fortune's Bones: The Manumission Requiem, which has inspired a Seattle community-wide exploration of the story of Fortune.Fortune was an enslaved African American who lived in Waterbury, Conn., in the late 1700s. He was married and the father of 4 children. When Fortune died in 1798, his legal owner, Dr. Porter, preserved his skeleton to further the study of anatomy. Fortune wasproperly buried on Sept. 12, 2013 in Waterbury, Connecticut. His remains lay in state in the capitol rotunda (Hartford) that day and the funeral service was held at the St. John's Episcopal Church on the Green where Fortune reportedly had been baptized. He was interred in the Riverside Cemetery. Learn more about this story at:http://www.fortunestory.org/fortune/who.asp.

Followed by a Q&A and panel discussion.

This event is free and open to the public.
