JATGR #23 features the Bob Nieske 4, which includes bassist and composer Nieske, trumpeter Phil Grenadier, guitarist David Tronzo, and drummer Jon Hazilla.

Bob says, "We improvise and play things we already know. We play free music and written music freely. There will also be pieces from the 'standard' jazz book and Nieske compositions." Their record 1, 2, Free, 4 is a collection of beautiful, unique, & spacious compositions.

About the players: Bob Nieske has performed and recorded with such wide-ranging musicians and bands as Jimmy Giuffre, Either/Orchestra, Stephane Grappelli, George Russell, David Grisman and Gerry Beaudoin. Phil Grenadier's career, which included a Down Beat award at 17, has included turns as a leader and work as a sideman to such luminaries as John Scofield and Jerry Bergonzi. Bottleneck guitar innovator David Tronzo, seen locally as a regular part of the Club d'Elf circle, has performed and recorded with such acts as the Lounge Lizards, Medeski Martin & Wood, John Cale, John Hiatt, and Sex Mob. Jon Hazilla is a noted educator and has performed and/or recorded with Jo Anne Brackeen, Billy Taylor, Ray Drummond, Ron Carter, George Garzone and Max Roach, among others.
