A Purim reading- not your average Purim Beauty Contest. Readers: Anya Achtenberg, Rebecca Kanner, Neal Karlen, Alison Morse and Margie Newman MC: David Unowsky
Celebrating the holiday of Purim, which ends at sundown that day, each of these five Twin Cities based readers will read appropriate material from their own work.
Anya Achtenberg, award-winning fiction writer and poet, has authored a novella, two books of poetry, a novel, and a novel-in-progress. She teaches creative writing nationally, in fiction and memoir. As a writing consultant and editor, she has worked individually with many fiction writers, memoirists and poets.
Rebecca Kanner won a Loft Mentorship Award in 2007 and was a runner-up for the 2009 McKnight Award. She's been published in The Kenyon Review, The Cincinnati Review, The Bellingham Review, Dogzplot and Third Coast. She has a personal essay forthcoming in War Literature & The Arts, and a fiction story forthcoming in The Tusculum Review.
Neal Karlen was speaking Yiddish at home well before he was an Associate Editor at Newsweek and Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone. A regular contributor to the New York Times, he has authored seven books, most recently "The Story of Yiddish".
Alison Morse's poetry and prose have been published in Natural Bridge, Water~Stone, Rhino, Opium Magazine, The Potomac, and other journals. She teaches at North Hennepin Community College and runs TalkingImageConnection, an organization that brings together writers, contemporary visual artists and new audiences.
Margie Newman's publications include Jewish Currents, Outlook and Dislocate. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota. She was a winner of the Loft Shabo Award and the Loft Mentorship Series. She is currently at work on a memoir.
