Best of the South Sunday Brunch with Carlo Petrini
Slow Food Members, please join us for the Best of the South Sunday Brunch at Le Cordon Bleu Atlanta on Sunday, February 21st from 12:30-2:00 pm to welcome the visionary founder of the Slow Food movement, Mr. Carlo Petrini.
Carlo Petrini staged an ironic protest at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy when the neon golden arches appeared there in the mid 1980's. He and a group of friends and fellow journalists sat in the square and ate eat bowls of pasta to show their support for traditional foods, in reaction to the fast food giant moving into their country, and threatening their traditional food culture. Since its beginnings, Slow Food has grown into a vast network spread across 150 countries, with more than 100,000 members. Slow Food organizes activities, projects and events all around the world, at all levels, by the local chapters. It is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organization founded to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
Carlo Petrini, the man behind the movement, will make several appearances across the United States as his new book, entitled "Terra Madre" is released in English by Chelsea Green Publishing. His first stop is Georgia, and he will be making several guest appearances. On Sunday, February 21st, 2010, 11am -12:30pm, Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts will host a book signing and reception, free and open to the public. There will be a "Best of the South" brunch following the book reception from 12:30-2:00pm, for Slow Food members only. That afternoon, leaders from Slow Food chapters throughout the southeast will hold their annual regional meeting with Mr. Petrini as the guest of honor.
Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Atlanta, is the first culinary college in the United States to create a Slow Food on Campus chapter. Slow Food on Campus is a network of Slow Food chapters at colleges and universities across the country. Run by student members, Slow Food on Campus chapters engage their community and the next generation of Slow Food leaders in creating a good, clean, and fair food system. Slow Food on Campus members represent a passionate cross-section of youth addressing food system and food justice issues, spanning environmental and social causes.
