Aleister Crowley's The Rite of Mercury, a rock opera
"We are the Poets! We are the children of the wood and stream, of mist and mountain, of sun and wind! We are the Greeks! and to us the rites of Eleusis should open the doors of heaven, and we shall enter in and see God face to face. Under the stars will I go forth, my brothers, and drink of that lustral dew: I will return, my brothers, when I have seen God face to face and read within those eternal eyes the secret that shall make you free. Then will I choose you and test you and instruct you in the Mysteries of Eleusis, oh ye brave hearts, and cool eyes, and trembling lips! I will put a live coal upon your lips, and flowers upon your eyes, and a sword in your hearts, and ye also shall see God face to face. Thus shall we give back its youth to the world, for like tongues of triple flame we shall look upon the Great Deep - Hail unto the Lords of the groves of Eleusis!" ~Aleister Crowley, Eleusis.
Eleusyve Productions is an amateur theater group based in Seattle, Washington. Our goal at Eleusyve Productions is the presentation of the seven plays comprising Aleister Crowley's Rites of Eleusis as musical theater pieces in a manner that will render them more fully accessible to a broad and discriminating audience, using music, light, dance and drama to enhance the poetry and symmetry of the original works. It is further our goal to make these completed productions available in as many formats and to as many markets as possible, in order to more widely circulate our artistic interpretations of this material.
We invite you to join us for our celebration of The Rite of Mercury. These 2010 productions mark the centennial of Crowley's original public presentation of the material at Caxton Hall in London, and are a part of our continuing effort to present his considerable works in a manner that is equally entertaining and illuminating.
Aleister Crowley was an English occultist, writer, mountaineer, poet, playwright, yogi, and possible spy who exerted a significant influence on modern popular culture. He was an influential member of occult organizations, including the Golden Dawn, the A.:.A.:., and the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.). He is known today for his Tarot design, The Book of Thoth, and his magical writings, especially The Book of the Law, which is the central sacred text of Thelema.
Since his passing he has become an icon of the counter-culture, appearing on the cover of the Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", referenced in songs by David Bowie and Ozzy Osbourne, and widely quoted by artist from Led Zeppelin to rapper Jay-Z. While often mischaracterized as a Satanist, even his detractors confess to his considerable genius.
