A Streetcar Named Desire at New City Theater - Seattle
CIVIC REP is a newly-formed group of mid-career artists, committed to producing modern classics and new work. Our members are:
L. Zane Jones, producer/director Robin Jones, producer/actor Thea Cooper, playwright/dramaturge Angie Harrison, designer/visual artist
"A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams is our inaugural production.
Intimate
Our vision is to strip away all the preconceptions and assumptions about this play and the people in it to reveal the authentic, raw and visceral reality beneath, a world that is painfully personal, intimate and human.
Immediate
We have come to know and understand so much about the disease of alcoholism since this play was first produced in 1947. We now understand that substance abuse and its attendant behaviors are not a result of moral depravity. Likewise we have new awareness and insight into the effects of sexism and misogyny, and the tendency to perceive and experience expressions of desire and unmet needs, especially from women, as a disturbing voice that must be silenced.
Insightful
Williams called "Streetcar" a 'cautionary tale', warning us that 'if we don't watch out, the brutes will take over.' He also defined the play as, 'A plea for the understanding of the delicate people.' These notions are very much with us today. We come to this play with a desire to know ourselves and each other better, that we might deeply consider the plight of the disempowered, lest we continue to participate in their destruction.
This production is produced under the auspices of Actors' Equity Members' Project Code.
This project was supported, in part, by an award from 4Culture. www.4culture.org
