Shoreline Community College Opera Workshop
February 18, 19, 20, 2010 | SCC Opera 7:30pm | Campus Theatre This year's workshop features the world premiere of The Legend of Poker Alice. This one-act opera by Shoreline emeriti Gloria Swisher and Willy Clark retells the true story of Alice Ivers. Arriving in the rough-and-tumble world of Deadwood, South Dakota, Alice soon established herself as an adept poker player, saloon owner, and rancher owner. "She was a cigar smokin', gun totin', poker playin' keeper of a house of ill repute. If somebody threatened her or challenged her, she wasn't afraid to shoot. She took her place at the table and stayed until the game was done. She met all comers who wandered in, and most of the time she won. She played her life like a gambler's hand, she was never afraid to take a stand. She smoked black stogies to help her play and she didn't quit until her dying day. She buried three husbands before she died and now her legend is Deadwood's pride. Poker Alice!" Also featured will be excerpts from Verdi's Il Trovatore and Falstaff, Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, and Mark Adamo's Little Women.
