PLOP! Nights presents SUDDeN ORPHeUS by NAKeD PUPPeTS
PLOP!, Olympia's new puppetry center, will present the West Coast premiere of SUDDeN ORPHeUS in February. The new multimedia work for grown-ups by experimental puppet company, NAKeD PUPPeTS, recently opened in NYC, and was developed collaboratively between NAKeD PUPPeTS' Ariel Goldberger, and nationally known poet, LEONARD SCHWARTZ. This performance is an installment of PLOP! Nights, the monthly live puppetry theater series for adults. PLOP! stands for the Performance Laboratory for Objects and Puppets.
SUDDeN ORPHeUS is a new multimedia work, in which collaborators Goldberger and Schwartz explore the frontier between poetry and puppetry. The work's underworld imagery draws from the myth of Orpheus, the sculptures of Giacometti, and Schwartz's own poems. The original ghostly soundscape for the show is composed out of Schwartz's poetry and experimental digital music composed by Goldberger. Master puppeteer Goldberger designed puppets in a variety of puppetry techniques, including rod-puppets, shadow puppets, and direct-manipulation table-top puppets, based on a technique inspired by German puppeteer Enno Podehl who he met in Germany. DIANNE FERRER's enthralling puppet manipulation brings to life the poetic, haunting and strange imagery of SUDDeN ORPHeUS.
SUDDeN ORPHeUS was first performed at Poet's House in New York City to great success last fall and was the first theatrical performance in the new state-of-the-art facility dedicated to poetic works. After New York, the show played in Las Vegas at their citywide book conference and will continue to tour nationally in a variety of venues after the PLOP! performance in Olympia.
PLOP!, which stands for the Performance Laboratory for Objects and Puppets, is a new performance center dedicated to fostering innovative Puppet Theatre through public performances, classes and artist laboratories. PLOP! was founded in August 2009 by co-directors Ariel Goldberger and Dan Luce. PLOP! is currently located at Northern (321 4th Ave SE) in downtown Olympia, WA - the headquarters of the Olympia All-Ages Project. PLOP! shares with the Olympia All-Ages Project the goal of bringing exciting cultural events to downtown Olympia.
