Young Lakota is a uniquely sensitive documentary portrayal of bright young people finding their way during a tumultuous political season on the Pine Ridge Reservation, that hinges on reproductive rights and tribal sovereignty. The film follows the surprising highs and lows of the statewide referendum on abortion, a divisive tribal election, and three youth who find themselves thrust into the political fight.
Please join us for a post-screening panel discussion:
The panel following the screening will explore and expand upon the issues brought up in the film in a discussion between co-directors Marion Lipschutz & Rose Rosenblatt and other leaders who bring a diversity of experiences and approaches to the theme of Native women's health.
National activist Cecelia Fire Thunder will fly into Seattle for the discussion, and the panel will be moderated by Abigail Echo-Hawk, the tribal liaison for the University of Washington Partnerships for Native Health and the Institute for Translational Health Sciences.
Topics to be discussed include the intersection of reproductive freedom with environmental health, health activism, political activism, health education, culturally-safe practices, and traditional knowledge.
