Babes With Blades Theatre Company Presents: A Gulag Mouse by Arthur M. Jolly
If it says "Sold Out" - call the box office - we will have a waiting list!
Five women face off in a fierce power struggle, where nothing is entirely as it seems... Fierce Masha, brutal and practical - Sexy Lubov, favorite of the jailers - Jaded Svetlana, guarded and empty - Quiet Prushka, timid and hopeful - Beautiful Anastasia, the newcomer... Who will survive? Who will live?
Recommended a "Must See" Show -
"The combat is hand to hand, brutal and primal. The play's conclusion is unexpected ...(I) strongly recommend this moving and well-realized show." - Rory Leahy, Centerstage Chicago
"...as playwright Arthur Jolly demonstrates in this taut drama about a night in a cramped women's barracks, survival in the camps often required its own brand of combat--an animalistic fight to the death with cruel guards and desperate fellow prisoners over extra rations and better jobs. Brian Plocharczyk's staging and David Woolley's fight choreography have a convincing savagery..." - Zac Thompson, The Reader
An original play by Mr. Arthur Jolly, winner of the most recent Babes With Blades Joining Sword and Pen international playwriting competition. The competition, launched in 2005, is dedicated to increasing the number of quality scripts featuring strong, varied roles for women. Entries have come from as near as Chicago to as far away as South Africa and New Zealand.
A Gulag Mouse, originally titled Tjurjga (pronounced Tyoor-YAH-gah, Russian slang for jail), is set in an inmates' bunkhouse of a Siberian gulag in 1949 post-war Soviet Union.
