Advancements in Student Housing Design
What do today's student residents and their parents expect from student housing options at colleges across the nation? Current students are unlike previous generations in many ways and their housing should reflect those unique needs accordingly. Design Principal, David Senden, and Senior Designer, Benjamin Kasdan, AIA, of KTGY Group, Inc. will discuss the latest trends, technology, sustainability, accessibility, and innovation in contemporary student housing. Case studies will include UCI Puerta del Sol, UCI Camino del Sol, BLVD63 in San Diego, The Daumier at Western University in Pomona, and 2125 Franklin in Eugene, OR.

As part of the new generation of leadership at KTGY, David Senden is instrumental to the expansion and increased design profile of the firm. Mr. Senden specializes in urban infill residential and mixed-use developments, with work across the United States and internationally. In addition, he has a substantial portfolio of campus housing and specialty projects including affordable developments and recreation facilities. Since joining KTGY in early 2002, he has led teams in each of KTGY's offices and often travels where needed to contribute to the firm's most challenging design opportunities.
As member of KTGY's Board of Directors, Mr. Senden is responsible for setting the big picture, strategic vision for the firm, increasing the firm's profile and ensuring work at the highest levels. He was named to Building Design + Construction magazine's list of the industry's top 40 under 40 and has designed numerous award-winning projects from coast to coast.
Mr. Senden is a frequent speaker at various national and regional industry events and has written and contributed to countless articles touching on all aspects of design and the building industry. A lecturer and critic at several universities, Mr. Senden emphasizes the connection between the profession and the academy and values mentorship as key to developing talent and integrating the most current design thinking.
Prior to joining KTGY, Mr. Senden worked for several firms including MVE & Partners in Southern California and Brian Gille Architects in New Orleans, where he began his design career focused on high-end custom homes, remodels and a variety boutique commercial projects.
Benjamin Kasdan AIA, LEED AP, NCARB Senior Project Designer
Benjamin Kasdan, AIA, LEED AP, is a Senior Project Designer at KTGY Group, Inc. He has been involved in the design and planning of a wide variety of real estate projects located throughout California, the East Coast and internationally for more than a decade. Mr. Kasdan's primary focus is the sustainable design of multifamily, mixed-use, and urban-infill housing developments. His experience includes affordable housing, market-rate apartments and condominiums, townhomes, student housing, and commercial buildings.
He is a frequent architectural design critic and contributes articles and blog posts on topics related to sustainable architecture and multifamily housing to periodicals such as Builder News Magazine and Green Home Builder Magazine.
Mr. Kasdan has held leadership positions with the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, AIA Orange County, AIA California Council and AIA National. He is currently an NCARB Architect Licensing Advisor for KTGY, the Young Architect Regional Director for Southern California on the AIA National Young Architects Forum (YAF) and the AIA California Council (AIACC) Academy of Emerging Professionals (AEP), an mentor/supervisor, and is a licensed architect in California, Oregon and Washington, DC.
