Seattle Novyi Theatre Presents The Seagull by Anton Chekhov
Seattle Novyi Theatre

              "Simpler Higher Lighter Merrier"

WHAT: Seattle Novyi Theatre is the child of a thirteen week workshop with Honored Artist of Russia Leonid Anisimov. He is the artistic director of the Tokyo Novyi Theatre in Japan, and the former artistic director of the Chamber Drama Theatre of Vladivostok in Russia. Mr. Anisimov's work is based on the techniques employed by K. Stanislavski during his last years at the Moscow Art Theatre in the 1930's. Our goal is to explore theatre using the Stanislavski System, and bring communication, inner life and re-living to the stage. We invite you to join us on what will be a year long journey striving toward this goal.

The first day of Spring 2006, Seattle Novyi Theatre began its life in Seattle with a performance of The Seagull.  On June 3, 2006 we began this journey anew with a performance of Uncle Vanya.  From that point forward we will offer weekly performances of either Uncle Vanya or The Seagull through March 24, 2007 in this intimate, twenty-seat venue located on the northern shores of Lake Washington. In addition to our commitment to provide repertory theatre in Seattle, another unique aspect of our group is its international composition.  Our members include theatre artists who now make their home in Seattle but originally come from the countries of Canada, Cuba, England, India, Japan and Russia.

Anton Chekhov: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (29 January 1860 -15 July 1904) was a major Russian writer known primarily for his short stories and plays. Many of his short stories are considered the apotheosis of the form while his plays have had a great impact on dramatic literature and performance.
