Israelâs most inflammatory political trial and assassination of the 1950s, of Rezso Kasztner, is explored in this provocative and thought-provoking documentary This is a troubling documentary about Zeev Eckstein, the assassin who took it upon himself to execute Rudolph Kasztner, a Hungarian Holocaust survivor after he was pardoned b y the Israeli government. Kasztnerâs crime was failing to inform Hungaryâs 300,000 Jews that Eichman planned to quickly send them off to death camps in 1944. He bribed Eichman to allow him to select 1680 Hungarian Jews to be shipped to freedom in Zurich. They included members of his family, friends and those who could afford to pay $1680. The film follows the now elderly assassin as he tries to come to terms with his conscience. He is persistent in his efforts to meet the Kasztner family. Kasztner when he first migrated to Israel, was initially hailed as a hero, one of the few Jews who did anything about saving the lives of a large group of Jews. In addition Kastzner had worked in Budapest with a rescue group smuggling Europeâs Jews to momentary safety in Hungary. Until 1944 Admiral Horthy, Hungaryâs dictator, a fierce nationalist, refused Hitlerâs request to turn over Hungaryâs Jewish population. When the Nazis invaded Hungary the fate of the Jewish population was sealed. The later discovery that Kasztner failed to inform Hungaryâs Jews of their fate transformed him from a hero to a monster. âVic Skolnick USA, 2008, 120 min.â Director: Gaylen Ross
