New Habits: workshops in Movement and Human Behaviour
New Habits: workshops movement and human behaviour
Two workshops on Laban technique. Three exploratory workshops which will investigate material such as body language and social rules, working out how to use them for rehearsal & performance.
We aim to generate skills/observations/material that you can use in your work. These sessions grow from the work Julie Osman has been doing in previous Freathy Tippett workshops, in movement coaching with opera singers, and in rehearsal.
Purpose of the work: Exploring what you have at your disposal as an artist, ie extending your range. Learning new skills (toolkit approach). Helping to keep you 'match-fit', ie exercising your performing muscles and thought patterns. Becoming aware of your defaults/habits, so you aren't a slave to them but have choices.
Who for: professional actors and singers. It's aimed at performers who are interested in developing their craft by trying out new approaches and sharing their responses.
THE WORKSHOPS
Laban: looks systematically at how people move; it gives you a toolkit for character development and the ability to be as specific in your movement choices as you are with text or voice.
Release work (Thursday 20 Nov) "Gravity is your first partner" (Rosemary Brandt) Looking at what helps or hinders your body, and letting go of unnecessary work. Developing new habits which can replace habitual tensions; enabling your whole body to be responsive. Weight-sharing moving your body's weight in space and in relation to others; building relationships, helping with release, extending your range.
'Presence' and energy (Friday 21 Nov) How energy works in relation to the audience: permission to watch, willingness to be watched, being present, trusting the work. Also personal space zones and other rules of social interaction.
Laban Qualities (Monday 24 Nov) How we manage the five Motion Factors: Weight, Force, Space, Time, and Flow.
Laban Rhythms (Wednesday 26 Nov) Five different patterns of how we change speed and create visual rhythms (Impact, Impulse, Swing, Rebound, Continuous). Shape and body language (Friday 28 Nov) Shape and relationships on stage (eg. line, angles, distance, focus). Non-verbal communication (eg. orientation, use of eyes, gesture).
