Brian Copeland in The Jewelry Box
Presented by the San Leandro Historical Society. With his trademark wit and wisdom, Copeland portrays his six-year-old self and several more characters as he spins a poignant story of adventures in his quest to earn $11.97 to buy Mom a Christmas present. If you loved "Not a Genuine Black Man", you'll love seeing precocious Brian, tell-it-like it is Grandma, and sweet Mom back on the stage in this bright comedy.

A master comedian and storyteller, Copeland brings each character to vivid life as he scours the help wanted ads, applies for a car salesman position, collects bottles, and discovers the true meaning of gift giving.

"Remarkable...If you see one Christmas show this year, let it be Brian Copeland's The Jewelry Box."                  ~Stark Insider

"Glitters with bright comedy, sharply observed local color and deftly drawn characters as well as genuine warmth."        ~Robert Hurtwitz, SF Chronicle

"Charming...heartwarming...Destined to be a holiday classic."     ~Leslie Katz, SF Examiner

The new and beautiful Performing Arts Center at San Leandro HIgh School is the venue for this charming production.

Meet-and-greet Brian Copeland and enjoy cookies and punch after the play.

Copeland has been mining his personal experience, contemporary culture, and history throughout his career as a playwright, author, KGO radio show host, and commentator. His first play, "Not a Genuine Black Man", tells the story of African-American Copeland and his family moving to lily-white San Leandro in 1972.  With Copeland's unique blend of laugh-out-loud hilarity and gut-wrenching poignancy, "Genuine" made history as the longest-running solo play in San Francisco. It has played in more than 30 cities across America to critical and audience acclaim.  His second play, "The Waiting Period",  explores Copeland's lifelong struggle with depression. "The Scion" explores the story behind the headlines of Stuart Alexander's shocking triple homicide in San Leandro in the year 2000. And now, "The Jewelry Box" brings us a sweet and touching story of six-year-old Brian's quest for the perfect gift for Mom.

A fundraiser for the San Leandro Historical Society, and a treat for you and your family.  At an hour run time, you can fit it in to your busy holiday schedule -- Don't miss it!
