Jonathan Poretz - Swinging Crooner Celebrates CD Release
Swinging singer Jonathan Poretz's new CD, A Lot of Livin' to Do, is a celebration of the style and spirit of Frank Sinatra and the grand Rat Pack days, but one of the great strengths of Poretz as an artist is his ability to so ably take that spirit and make it his own.
Poretz surely has the credentials to make his tribute work. He's been appearing as Sinatra in the wonderful stage show "Tribute to Frank, Sammy, Joey & Dean (The Rat Pack)," a smash in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Boston and Memphis.
As Dan McClenaghan of All About Jazz said in his review of Poretz's new CD, "Frank Sinatra's footwear makes for some tough shoes to fill. But judging by A Lot of Livin' to Do, San Francisco-based vocalist Jonathan Poretz has done an able job of rendering Old Blue Eyes. . . . Not that Poretz sounds like Sinatra on the recording. With a delivery that is closer to that of another Sinatra-influenced singer, Bobby Darin, Poretz comes across silky, swinging and cool as hell, sort of a cross between Darin and Mel Torme."
With Poretz at his Pearl's performance will be a great band featuring Noel Jewkes on sax, Lee Bloom on piano, Jeff Neighbor on bass and Vince Lateano on drums. Big-time swingers all, these musicians appear A Lot of Livin' to Do, so they're just the guys to make this night an entertaining celebration of swing, Sinatra and, above all, the talent and style of singer Jonathan Poretz.
"Man, can this guy Poretz scat, loose and insoucianta bit of a lost art, it sometimes seems, in the male vocalist field." - Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz
Jonathan Poretz has always been comfortable performing his own special stylings of the great American jazz standards. Poretz brings an electric energy to any stage he's on, a talent he's been cultivating since his early teens, when he sang professionally in bands that featured jazz greats like Charlie Shavers, Chuck Wayne and Joe Puma in his home town of New York City.
In addition to appearing as Frank Sinatra in the Tribute to Frank, Sammy, Joey & Dean (The Rat Pack) Poretz appears regularly at Bay Area venues including LJ's Martini Club, Jazz @ Shanghai 1930 and The Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay.
He is also a regular vocalist with the Harold Jones Boss Men big band, led by legendary drummer Harold Jones, the beat behind Count Basie in the 70s and Sarah Vaughan in the 80s, and currently on tour with Tony Bennett.
Never an entertainer to rest on his laurels, Poretz also appears as the featured vocalist for the Starduster Orchestra big band and the Joe Agro Sextet, with whom he's performed at events like the Sausalito Arts Fair, the Caledonia Street Fair and Jazz and Blues by the Bay in Sausalito.
