John Payne and The Hurt featuring Dr. Fink from The Revolution
John Payne and The Hurt featuring Dr. Fink is a five-piece tribute band hailing from the Bay Area along with Dr. Fink, an original member from Prince and The Revolution. They have been zig-zagging around the country since February of 2011, bringing the memories of Prince and The Revolution to audiences of all generations and leaving no one disappointed.
Matthew Robert "Matt" Fink, better known by the stage name Doctor Fink, is a keyboardist, record producer, and songwriter best known as a member of The Revolution, the backing band for rock musician Prince. Fink won a Grammy Award in 1985 for the album Purple Rain. He received another Grammy in 1986 for the album Parade: Music from the Motion Picture Under the Cherry Moon, the eighth studio album by Prince and The Revolution. Fink also has two American Music Awards for Purple Rain, which has sold over 25 million copies worldwide since its release. Fink joined Prince's band in 1979 and at that time during live performances he wore a costume of a jailbird, which he later changed to surgical scrubs and mask. He continued working with Prince until 1991 as an early member of the New Power Generation (though the band was not officially named until after Fink's departure). Fink was also a member of the jazz-fusion band Madhouse, produced by Prince and Eric Leeds, Prince's saxophonist.
Notable work with Prince includes co-writing credits on the songs Dirty Mind, Computer Blue, 17 Days, America, and It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, as well as performing credits on the albums Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign 'O' the Times, The Black Album, and Lovesexy.
John Wesley Payne is a talented songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalists. He topped the charts with the self-produced release Strange New Thing, featuring all tracks written by Payne. He later went on to perform and record with legendary artists such as George Clinton and Parliament/ Funkadelic, Grateful Dead organist Merl Saunders, Sly and The Family Stone bassist Larry Graham and others.
It was through Graham back in 2003 that Payne was asked by Prince himself if he could fly out to Chanhassen, Minnesota, for a meeting at Prince's Paisley Park Studios. "It was an experience of a lifetime to be called out of the blue directly by one of the people who influenced you," recalls Payne. "It was a dream come true." What makes this tribute band different from many others, they're tied directly to the source with all the original songs and creating an authentic Prince sound. The band not only features one of the original members from the golden era of Prince's legendary career but also world class musicians who have worked with Jay Z, Boys 2 Men and many others.
Get ready for John Payne and the Hurt featuring Dr. Fink and brace yourself for the Purple Experience!
