FESTIVUS FILM FEST: My Name is Jerry
'My Name Is Jerry' is the story of a man attempting to reinvent himself and of a group of young people trying to invent themselves. Jerry is a door-to-door salesman and a father whose exuberance for life has been on the decline since his divorce, ten years prior to the film's beginning. Tired of his life and his job, he accepts an invitation to a 4th of July party, but a mistake in the address sends him to the wrong house. By mere fate, Jerry is thrown into a world of young people whose energy remind him of all the lost possibilities of youth. Looking for a new job while in the process of falling for a young woman in the punk group, Jerryâs estranged daughter unexpectedly shows up on his doorstep. Angry with her father for leaving their home and remaining distant from her, Trisha punishes Jerry at every opportunity. The conflict between father and daughter, between jobs, and generations sets up a series of comic and dramatic moments as Jerry struggles to repair his relationship with his daughter, explores new modes of expression, fights to become a successful salesman, resists the advances of a Korean grandmother to âfixâ him up with her grand daughter, competes with a jealous boyfriend, reverts to adolescent behavior and tries to change his life. In short, he comes close to losing everything before gaining the most important thing of all: himself.
Played by actor Doug Jones (known for his on screen mask work in such roles as Pan in 'Pan's Labyrinth,' Silver Surfer in 'The Fantastic Four: The Silver Surfer,' Abe Sapien in 'Hellboy II: the Golden Army') Jerry is a quirky and engaging everyman. His best friend and advisor is David (Don Stark of 'That 70's Show'). David, unknown to Jerry, has been having an affair with Dana Holderman (Catherine Hicks of '7th Heaven'), a personnel manager at the new company . Together, David and Dana help facilitate Jerry's professional changes while his daughter (Allison Scagliotti of 'Drake and Josh') enable his desire to become a good parent.
This engaging drama at once makes you laugh and cry. It speaks to anyone at any age that is in need of a change. Enhanced by an original punk rock score from Rick DiGiallonardo, My Name Is Jerry reminds us all, whether 20 or 40, that success is becoming the unique person we were meant to be. All we need do is, like Doug Jones, step out from behind the mask.
