Quilt Songs: American Songs in the Age of AIDS (Downtown Phoenix @ Trinity Cathedral)
This professional classical and musical theatre based concert features selections from the AIDS Quilt Songbook as well as additional works also inspired by the epidemic. The AIDS Quilt Songbook, conceived in 1991, is an ongoing musical response to AIDS.
This concert begins with songs from the 1992 Songbook, which express the struggles of those who grappled with AIDS in the 1980s and early 1990s. The second half of the program presents songs from the late 1990s through 2012, including works which explore HIV as a modern global epidemic, and deal with issues such as long term survivorship, and HIV in diverse populations.
All proceeds will go to Aunt Rita's Foundation, which funds 17 different HIV/AIDS service organizations in Arizona.
Note: This performance includes songs that deal openly with adult subject matter, including sexuality, sex work, and condom use.
