CHARLEMAGNE w/ The Hemlines, Vid Libert
Carl Johns began performing and recording under the name Charlemagne as a pop-centric side project to his alt-country band Noahjohn. From 2003 to 2007 Charlemagne released three albums and toured in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
Throughout its history, the lineup has been varied, ranging from Johns solo to up to 15 backing musicians. In addition the band has a somewhat nomadic history, beginning in Madison, relocating to Philadelphia, then New York, and now Berlin, Germany.
After a two year break, Johns has composed a new collection of Charlemagne songs, and now performs as a duo with Australian Emily Farrell. For the first three albums, the sound of Charlemagne was oft described as a mix of The Beach Boys, The Mamas And The Papas, The Vaselines, and late-80s/early-90s New Zealand pop. These elements are still present, however the new material owes something to Suicide and The Jesus and Mary Chain as well.
This show is the first Madison Charlemagne appearance since Fall 2007, and the US debut of the new songs. Also on the bill are Madisonians Vid Libert and The Hemlines. Vid Libert will be celebrating the release of a new CD.
