Ballet 5:8 in Fort Wayne, IN
With something for everyone, ballet enthusiast and first-time attenders alike, Chicago's Ballet 5:8 brings two full length programs of breathtaking professional dance to Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. These programs are made possible in part by Bott Radio Network and the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County.
On Saturday, March 21, Ballet 5:8 is thrilled to showcase Artistic Director Julianna Slager's The Four Seasons of the Soul, an breathtaking neoclassical ballet reflecting on "a time and a season for everything", an adage from the book of Ecclesiastes. Beginning with the idea of spring and new birth, the ballet uses the music of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the vivid colors and vibrant emotions of the seasons of nature as the basis for an exploration of the seasons of life. Employing many layers of meaning, Slager's deeply personal work takes audiences through the triumphs and failures of a life of faith, modeled by those who have gone before.
The Four Seasons program also includes two reflective, abstract works in contrasting styles. Indwelling, set to solo piano, employs a classical balletic style but with sharp, harsh movements as the ballet depicts the struggle between good and evil within. Sigao Ekklessia wrestles with questions about church using raw, emotional and largely relatable movements set to the music of Haydn's Stabat Matter.
On Sunday, March 22, Ballet 5:8 will perform its full length story ballet Belteshazzar: A Perilous Tale. A fantastic event for the whole family, Belteshazzar brings the Biblical story of Daniel to the stage in dramatic proportions. Featuring kings and kingdoms, royal egos, unfathomable dangers and mysterious dreams, the ballet takes audiences to the ancient Middle East for a wild ride alongside the young Daniel and his amazingly unwavering integrity. Set to the fabulous music of Benjamin Britten's score originally used for Prince of the Pagodas, the ballet Belteshazzar is an important story for us all in a day where standing firm according to our convictions is easier said than done.
