Sung exhibits formidable technical skills honed by a solid classical foundation. After her passion for jazz was ignited by a Henry Connick Jr. performance, Sung "enrolled in beginning jazz courses and immersed herself in the work of every jazz pianist imaginable, from Jelly Roll Morton to Cecil Taylor to Keith Jarrett".
The playlist for the upcoming concert is certain to include, "Brother Thelonious" a Sung original written in tribute to Thelonius Monk that was commissioned by the presenting sponsor, North Coast Brewery. Her recording of this tune on "Anthem for a New Day" reflects musicality of the highest and most technically proficient order. Solidly rooted in the traditions of jazz and classical music, Sung's innovations reflect a pleasing joyfulness and integrity. Accompanying Helen Sung are: Tenor saxophonist John Ellis, Drummer Rodney Green, Trumpeter Alex Norris, Bassist Dave Robaire.
