Market Ghost Tours are one hour + walking tours through the Pike Place Market and are based on the stories of hauntings shared in the community. Seattle is not unique in its many stories of ghosts, every city shares stories. Seattle is unique however in that it went through major renovation for 30 years after the Great fire in 1889. Some believe that it is the movement of earth, structures and graves that create Seattles many stories.
The Market Ghost Tours are the stories of the people that lived on the land before the Pike Place Market, like Princess Angeline, Chief Seattle's daughter, and those have recently departed but still remain in the Arcades. Within the Market, Seattle's first mortuary stands, the remnants of a graveyard have been found, and an old brothel still has a red glow cast on it's walls.
The tour has been present in the Market for over 20 years, given on Halloween night. Since 2005 it has become a year round event. In 2009 it earned the honor of being voted the 2nd Best Ghost Tour in the country by Trip Advisor. The Pike Place Market has also been rated as the 2nd most haunted location in Washington State by viewers of Evening Magazine. Mercedes Yaeger, who runs the ghost tours, can be heard on KUOW.com - just search for her name to hear some of the stories of hauntings in Seattle. The tour is moderately adult in content. If you come with children under 10 years of age, there is no charge for them to be on the tour. Please come prepared to be outside in Seattle weather.
"Terrific fun. Whether you're a local who wants something entertaining to do at night, or if you have an out-of-town guest visiting, it's a fun and educational tour. I learned a lot about Pike Place and areas of downtown & Pioneer Square. And it's not boring history, it's all very entertaining (brothels, murderers, etc). I would do this tour multiple times. I definitely would like to do it as the sun goes down earlier in the fall, so that it's night time during the tour." - yelp.com review
