The Sarab: Classical music from the Arab world
Grammy-nominated Souhail Kaspar, Master Percussionist, is known worldwide for his brilliant technique, exciting performances and exceptional teaching skills. Born in Lebanon and trained at Nadi al-Fonun al-Arabia (Conservatory of Traditional Arabic Music) in Aleppo, Syria where he received his Degree in Classical Arabic Performance. Mr. Kaspar has worked with legendary Egyptian composers Farid al-Atrash, Sayyad Makowi and Hanni Mehanna. He has traveled extensively during his career and has performed with artists John Bilezikjian, Kenny Burrell, Omar Faruk, Shujaat Khan, Kronos Quartet, Cheb Mami, Dr. Scott Marcus, Roberto Miranda, Tito Puente, The Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Kathem al-Saher, Simon Shaheen, Sting, Strunz & Farah, Wadi al-Safi and many others. He has also performed for dignitaries such as Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and the Dalai Lama.
Master oudist, Afif Taian was born in Syria and received his formal training at the Institute of Music in Homs, Syria. He graduated at the age of 19 and has since has toured with many Arabic Pop Superstars as well as performing with various groups formed in the United States. Mr. Taians performances include concerts with the UCSB Middle East Ensemble with Dr. Scott Marcus, Kan Zaman of Los Angeles for the J.P. Getty Museum in Los Angeles, LA Convention Center, Town Hall Seattle, World Sacred Music Festival and public television. Mr.Taian has toured with several master vocalist superstars of Syria such as Shadi Gameel, Aboud Bashir, Shahd Barmada and the famous Aleppo group Salteen Al Tarab.
