OIL...Gary Austin's new solo show
Half a century ago in a windy Texas oil camp, young Gary Austin climbed on shoulders to grab a glimpse of the man for whom his father gratefully worked, Erle P. Halliburton. Gary Austin grew up 20 miles from George W. Bush. Gary's mom was born in Oilton, Oklahoma, in the biggest oil field in the world. Kids returned from school blackened by the mist from the oil wells.
After Gary migrated west, he joined the famed improv company The Committee in San Francisco, and subsequently founded the legendary Groundlings theatre company in Los Angeles. (Check out Gary's NPR "FRESH AIR" interview with Terry Gross online at http://freshair.npr.org. On January 24th of this year Gary Austin premiered his solo show "Oil" at The Groundling theatre.
Come play in Dubya's sandbox, go on a hot-shot, be there when a gusher comes in, visit a real Texas barbecue, and learn the meaning of "auspinacious." You will check into a house of prostitution converted into a hospital and find out how Halliburton bought Gary Austin's college summer for $2.74 an hour.
Sharply drawn characters walk us down the muddy path between corporate life and real life. Gary invites his mom and dad, oil tycoons, roustabouts, and reporters in to tell the truth in word and song.
