In Touch of Evil, Welles once again worked his magic to transform a pulp novel into a film that is simultaneously an enormously entertaining thriller and a haunting meditation on corruption and aging. Ten years after The Lady from Shanghai, age and make-up have transformed Welles from the boyish young innocent of the earlier film into the obese and corrupt Sherrif Hank Quinlan. Wellesâ performance as this once-idealistic law enforcement officer on the US/Mexican border is one of his greatest. Charlton Heston co-stars as a straight-laced Mexican cop on a honeymoon with his beautiful American wife (Janet Leigh) who finds himself pitted against Quinlan when a prominent politician is murdered. Along the way, Welles creates an unforgettable gallery of unforgettable characters played by Akim Tamiroff, Dennis Weaver, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Joseph Cotton, and most memorably, Marlene Dietrich as a world-weary gypsy fortune teller who tells her former-lover Quinlan: âYouâre a mess honey, youâve eaten too many candy bars.â - Vic Skolnick
