1st-Day PREVIEW: New Territories (LECTURE ONLY)
Come discover the creative ways artists are inspired through observations of their local environments; sourcing inspiration from "experiences as a consumer, citizen, and inhabitant of the planet" in the words of Pepe Lopez.  Delving into the creative process of the Venezuela and Paris-based artist, Lopez will give a featured artist presentation and led a hands-on workshop.

Drawing inspiration from the almost algorithmic patterning of the buildings in Venezuelan ranchos expressed in his minimal, geometric wall works and tapestries, Lopez will lead a workshop, "Lunas, Satellites, Mundos // Big, bang, boom" illustrating ways of implementing and integrating technology and art within the school curriculum using programs such as Google Earth.

"There are more than 14 thousand artificial satellites surrounding our planet, half of them are already out of usethey are trash."  Translating the orbit of these satellites into designs, participants will learn how to use repurposed, accessible materials to address the pollution surrounding the planet.

Join MAD's education team for a first-day preview of New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America, an exhibition that explores collaborations between small manufacturing operations and craftspersons, artists, and designers, and demonstrates how the resulting work addresses not only the issues of commodification and production, but also of urbanization, displacement and sustainability.  The exhibition will explore a number of key themes, including: the dialogue between contemporary trends and artistic legacies in Latin American art; the use of re-purposed materials in strategies of up-cycling; the blending of digital and traditional skills; and the reclamation of personal and public space.
