In Conversation/In Performance -- Dead Man Walking: Art and Social Justice
Dead Man Walking: Art and Social Justice Congregation Emanu-El and Opera Parallèle present a discussion of the confluence and intersection of art and social justice.
In anticipation of Opera Parallèle's February, 2015 production of Jake Heggie's landmark opera "Dead Man Walking", Opera Parallèle and Congregation Emanu-El present an evening of conversation featuring composer Jake Heggie, Sister Helen Prejean (on whose 1993 memoir the opera is based), the Opera Parallèle Artistic Team, and others. Selections from the opera and from Heggie's other works will be performed by esteemed San Francisco singers Frederica von Stade, Catherine Cook, Kristin Clayton, and Nicolle Foland, accompanied by Mr. Heggie at the piano. Mr. Heggie will also accompany Temple Emanu-El's renowned cantor, Roslyn Barak, in a special performance of Ravel's "Kaddish."
"Dead Man Walking" is one of the most frequently performed 21st century operas, with more than 40 productions, spanning the globe. The work was commissioned by the San Francisco Opera and premiered there in 2000. It has never been heard again in San Francisco since its original performances. Now, Opera Parallèle, in a new production, and in the world premiere of a new orchestration, prepares to present "Dead Man Walking" in performances Feb.20-22, 2015 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.
Among the participants in this special event are:

Sister Helen Prejean, whose 1993 memoir "Dead Man Walking" provides the basis for Heggie's opera, and was produced in 1995 as a celebrated film starring Oscar recipients Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. Sister Helen is one of the world's most powerful and eloquent advocates for the abolition of the death penalty.
Nicole Paiement, Opera Parallèle's Artistic Director, Founder, and Conductor.
