Occidental Community Choir -- Winter 2009 Concerts
"Winter Moon," the Occidental Community Choirs 2009 winter concert series, marks the debut of new music director Sarah Saulsbury. The program deftly blends choral repertoire from across the ages and genres from the sacred motet "Jubilate Deo" by Renaissance master Orlando di Lasso, to the playful and uplifting rhythms of "Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain" by Joseph Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to the sparkling modernity of "little tree," an e.e. cummings poem set to music by contemporary composer Steve Heitzeg.
As always, there is a generous helping of OCC original compositions, including the mellifluous "Red Gold Moon," by Gordon Stubbe; "Shabaikai," a meditation on the Russian River's journey through time and space by Reeta Roo; and "Light Against the Darkness," a soulful reflection on the spirit of Chanukah by Shari Kovner and Robin Eschner. Throw in the jazzy "Cool Yule," original arrangements of James Taylor's "Home By Another Way" and Kate Wolf's "Give Yourself to Love," and some offbeat rounds by the inimitable poet-mystic, Moondog, among other delights, and you've got something to please every musical palate.
The OCC has been delivering your West County holiday jollies for over thirty years. We hope you will come share the joy of beautiful music and the warmth of community spirit with us this season.
