SH!TSTORM: SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING (?)
SH!TSTORM is a no-holds-barred community discussion first developed in 2005 in response to the overly-polite, passionless panel discussions we in the artistic community so often find ourselves in. SH!TSTORM is ad-hoc, pulling together organizers as the need arises, and recent upheavals in our community have clearly created that need.
So, on October 28th, Seattle artists and community members are invited to West of Lenin to discuss the BONE OF CONTENTION and all related matters:
SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING(?)
When organizations fail, we inevitably look for reasons, and a constant refrain is "Why didn't anybody do anything or say anything?" And that, essentially, is what we want to discuss. Do artists feel empowered to point out problems? Should they? Do the existing power structures allow for open debate, or are they resistant to change from both within and without? Who ultimately should be accountable? And do we really want to live and work under constant observation?
These questions and more will be tackled.
Our invited speakers to get the conversation rolling are SHAWN BELYEA and AIMEE BRUNEAU.
The evening will be moderated by a PARLIAMENTARIAN (TBA).
All SH!TSTORM discussions operate under the OATH OF NO ATTRIBUTION: Participants of SH!TSTORM do hereby affirm the OATH OF NO ATTRIBUTION, agreeing that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of any speaker, nor that of any other participant, may be revealed. This is crucial to the success and the free exchange of ideas.
The evening will conclude with WHAT'S NEXT? when we solicit the audience for action items and pull together ad hoc teams to pursue those goals (perhaps convening at the nearby George & Dragon).
Tuesday October 28th West of Lenin Lobby opens at 6:30, doors at 7:15, and we start at 7:30
Only 65 tickets available.
SH!TSTORM belongs to the community. This iteration of SH!TSTORM is sponsored by The 14/48 Projects as part of our community-building mission. Big thanks to AJ Epstein and West of Lenin for inviting us into their space in the middle of load-in and tech.
