Soul Down Volume 2: Naima Shalhoub & Jackie Gage
After a strongly supported soul/jazz show in early August 2014, Jazz Search West Finalists Naima Shalhoub and Jackie Gage unite again in the space they first met, The Sound Room (Oakland, CA) in a tribute to jazz, art and soul. Soul Down is an expression of the modern movement of music in the Bay Area; when the sun goes down, the sultry music that accompanies it empowers cultures, genres, and the force of music within the world.
Naima Shalhoub
Naima is a singer/songstress, musician, performing artist and educator. After receiving her M.A. in Postcolonial Anthropology in San Francisco, Naima turned her focus toward song and music as vessels for story-telling, movement building and inspiration for feeling deeper. In 2010 she began performing all over the Bay, receiving features on radio stations such as KPFA, KZSU, reputable venues such as The Great American Music Hall and Yoshi's, and beginning to build fan bases internationally such as Beirut and Kashmir. In 2012 Naima released her first single and music video "herstory of soul," and this past May created the Borderlands Music Project where she facilitates weekly music sessions with incarcerated women in San Francisco County Jail. She recently presented at TedXLAU in Beirut and performed in a Golden Thread Productions' play "The Fifth String". Naima is currently teaching, performing, working on her debut record.

With a velvety voice that goes down like smooth wine, 24-year-old soul/jazz singer Jackie Gage easily captures listeners in her unique sound, with a grace and beauty that channels torch singers of decades past. With the support of San Jose Rotary, music projects with artists including John Worley and Oscar Pangilinan, prominent shows at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2012 and 2013, and multiple residencies at nationally-recognized venue Blackbird Tavern, among others-- even performing the National Anthem for Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta--this San Jose native is making her way into the heart of California. Gage is now working on her debut album, Ladies, set for release in 2015, and is on tour supporting this new music.
