World Savvy Monitor Panel: Perspectives on Iran: Culture, History and Perception
Global education non-profit World Savvy (www.worldsavvy.org) is hosting a panel: Perspectives on Iran: Culture, History and Perceptions in partnership with Columbia University Teachers College's Middle East Institute, the Department of International and Transcultural Studies, and the Society for International Education.
Panelists include:
New York Times UN Bureau Chief Neil MacFarquhar - Neil is the author of two books. The most recent, The Media Relations Department of Hizbollah Wishes You a Happy Birthday: Unexpected Encounters in the Changing Middle East (Public Affairs, May 2009), attempts to capture the underexposed side of the Middle East.
Iranian Filmmaker Maryam Habibian - Maryam Habibian, a native of Iran, received her Ph.D. in Educational Theater at New York University. Her most recent artistic endeavor, The Mist (2009) documents Maryam's journey across Tehran to visit with poets, actors, artists, and university students living in a culture that is complex and variegated, restrictive and secretly adventurous.
Columbia University Visiting Assistant Professor of Education Reza Arjmand - Reza Arjmand received his Ph.D. in Comparative Education from Stockholm University. He is the author of Inscription on Stone: Islam, State and Education in Iran and Turkey, and the forthcoming Handbook of Islam, Globalization and Education. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Moderated by Dana Curran Mortenson, Executive Director of World Savvy.
WHAT: An event to promote World Savvy's free online global affairs publication, the World Savvy Monitor, Perspectives on Iran: Culture, History and Perceptions will facilitate a dialogue of varied viewpoints on Iranian voice, culture, and media perceptions. After a facilitated discussion panelists will answer questions from the audience. An informal reception will follow the panel.
WHEN: Monday, December 7, 2009, 7:30PM-9:00PM WHERE: Columbia University Teachers College Milbank Chapel WHY: The high-profile nature of many of Iran's most pressing public issues: disputed elections, nuclear production, and terrorist activity overshadow the country's rich and complex cultural fabric which can lead to misinformation and xenophobia. World Savvy provides youth and educators with a global perspective on hot topics in the news. The Perspectives on Iran panel, and the World Savvy Monitor, present a well-rounded view of current events and culture in Iran and beyond.

About the Department of International and Transcultural Studies The ITS department prepares professionals to provide leadership in the educative configurations emerging in the new century. About the Middle East Institute The Middle East Institute of Columbia University, founded in 1954, has helped to set the national pace in developing an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Middle East from the rise of Islam to the present, with a primary focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. Fostering an inter-regional and multi-disciplinary approach to the region, the Institute focuses on the Arab countries, Armenia, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Central Asia, and Muslim Diaspora communities. About the Society for International Education The Society for International Education (SIE) is a student-based organization housed in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. The goal of SIE has been to promote an academic, professional, and social network for students and alumnae within the communities of Teachers College and Columbia University who share a special interest in the overlapping fields of International Educational Development and Comparative Education, as well as many sub-fields, including issues surrounding Humanitarian Affairs, Peace and Justice, and Languages and Literacies.
