Dia de Los Muertos 2014
The annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration is a weekend-long cultural festival that commemorates and honors the lives of departed loved ones through dance, music, offerings and art. Saturday, November 1 features our Dia de los Muertos procession through the streets of Historic San Juan Bautista.
The celebrated dance troupe Esperanza del Valle will return to perform during El Teatro Campesino's annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration.
"Our performance at El Teatro Playhouse will be an interpretation of a variety of Mexican "sones" from the Michoacán, Nuevo Leon, Nayarit, Huasteca, Veracruz, Jalisco and Colima," explains artistic director Janet Johns. Recognized for its diversity, culture and popularity, the "son" is the manifestation of traditional Mexican music and dance. Each pueblo's "son" reflects a mixing of the indigenous, European and African roots expressed so distinctly through its music, dance, verses, and movement. "Imagine yourself at the plaza in Veracruz where people gather to dance the traditional danzón. Or, in the Huasteca region during Día de los Muertos, where you will see the Danza de los Viejos, where men are disguised in masks and costumes to dance in the spirit of their loved ones who have passed on to come and partake of the festivities. In Nayarit, the dancers demonstrate their skills while balancing glasses and bottles on their heads, and the men dazzle the audience with challenging showmanship with the machete. Vivid color and energy marks the beautifully choreographed dances of Jalisco and its neighboring state, Colima." The dance performance will also feature traditional Mexican music by Cuatro con Tres.
Performances are scheduled for Friday, October 31 @ 8:00 PM, Saturday, November 1 @ 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM, and Sunday, November 2 @ 2PM. Viewings of the altares set up in the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse will begin one hour prior to performance times. Come and celebrate Día de los Muertos at El Teatro Campesino Playhouse with Esperanza del Valle!
