Redwood Symphony performs the 4th Subscription Concert of its 30th Anniversary year: Berio: Brahms Clarinet Sonata Op. 120, No. 1 with Robert Marcus, clarinet Ravel: L'enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells) with Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company (presented with super-titles)
Former Redwood Symphony member Robert Marcus returns to perform Brahms's first clarinet sonata, here orchestrated lovingly by the great Italian composer, Luciano Berio. This is the clarinet concerto that Brahms never got around to writing!
Ravel's The Child and the Spells sounds like a variation on Toy Story, but it was written decades earlier. A young boy, who has always mistreated his toys, pets and even the plants and animals outside the house, finds himself the object of their revenge! This one-hour opera, presented with the Bay Shore Lyric Opera, is a gorgeous and very funny collection of characters, including a singing duo of meowing cats, arias for a teacup and a sofa, with interpolations of jazz and even Puccini. (Presented with super-titles)
Maestro Kujawsky will deliver a pre-concert talk starting at 7 p.m. (admission required to attend).
