Our ninth class in the series will focus on growing in small spaces. Only have room for a couple of pots on your deck? No problem! There's plenty of things you can grow and harvest right outside your door. Learn what it takes to cram a lot of food plants in a tiny space...and--most importantly--get a harvest for you and your family. Whether it's a tiny plot in the front yard, a narrow slice next to the garage, or the parking strip out front, with the right preparation, you can grow food just about anywhere and in just about anything. Kate Halstead from Soil Sisters Plants & Produce will provide you with the recipe for growing success in tiny spaces.
And when you've covered the ground, it's time to go vertical! For years, Master Gardeners Rob and Richelle Taylor have transformed many gardens with innovative space-saving vertical structures. From lettuce walls to hanging pumpkins, the Taylors take advantage of the tiniest spot, and odd scraps of wood, to expand their food gardening to new heights. If you have an opportunity, check out the gardens at Jennings Park in Marysville. They've been transformed by the structures the Taylors and other volunteers have installed over the last several years.
The WSU Snohomish County Extension Growing Groceries Education Series brings together beginning and experienced gardeners with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices.
No matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck, small garden space, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh, healthy food in a healthier, more environmentally friendly way.
Developed over the last five years, the program's goal is to increase local access to fresh, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food.
