Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical - presented by Gualala Arts Theater
Both a thriller and a dark love story, Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical - based on "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson - is an evocative tale of two men, one a doctor, passionate and romantic and the other, a terrifying madman, and two women, one beautiful and trusting and the other, beautiful and trusting only herself. Both women are in love with the same man. Both are unaware of his dark secret.
A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve one of mankind's most challenging medical dilemmas. Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatment, accidentally unleashing his inner demon, the man the world would come to know as Mr. Edward Hyde.
Directed by Teo Ariola, the three leading roles have been double-cast, offering audiences two interpretations of the musical. The cast of 26 performers consists of seasoned veterans that you have seen on the Gualala Arts Theater stage before as well as first-time thespians who will surprise and delight the audience. Musical direction is by Don Krieger, vocal coaching by Sita Milchev and choreography by Bryn Harris.
The passion of the music is mysterious as well as lyrical. Songs from the show such as "Someone Like You," "A New Life" and "This Is the Moment" have been performed worldwide and have been featured at the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the World Cup international soccer championships, Miss America Pageants, the 1996 Democratic National Convention and the inauguration of President Clinton (sung by Jennifer Holliday). Unlike other musicals performed here at Gualala Arts Center, this show is more of an operetta with the story being told through the music with minimal dialog. Duets abound between the three leads leaving the audience wanting more.
This production includes scenes of graphic simulated violence and murder, and is not appropriate for children under 13.
