Saturday morning 9:00am-Noon March 14, 2015
Our eighth class in the series will focus on weeds and water in our gardens. While our maritime winters and springs are very wet our summers are often as dry as a desert leaving crops gasping for water by mid-July! And as for the weeds, they are happy to grow anytime!
Jeff Thompson, WSU Snohomish County Master Gardener and low volume irrigation instructor at Edmonds Community College, will share his strategies for applying water in the most efficient way possible for healthier vegetable gardens. His methods include the simple (mulching, planting strategies), to the more complex (drip systems), both commercial and homemade, along with other water-saving techniques.
You don't want to miss the presentation on weed management by WSU Weed Scientist Dr. Tim Miller, No Weeds, No Worries! You'll learn what's safe and--most importantly--what's effective to keep our gardens as weed free as possible. Miller has done extensive research on natural herbicides for weed control and will demystify the natural products being touted for weed control including corn gluten, mustard seed meal, vinegar, and others. His engaging and often humorous presentation is backed up by the hard research being done at WSU Mount Vernon on weed control in western Washington crops.
The WSU Snohomish County Extension Growing Groceries Education Series brings together beginning and experienced gardeners with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices.
No matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck, small garden space, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh, healthy food in a healthier, more environmentally friendly way.
Developed over the last five years, the program's goal is to increase local access to fresh, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food.
